New Poughkeepsie Restaurant Making Wing Lovers Happy

POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y. – The new Poughkeepsie restaurant Hurricane Grill & Wings must be doing something right.

“I’ve had a guy that’s been here 10 times in 16 days,” said Joe Rice, general manager of the Florida-based chain restaurant, which opened its doors at 9 Raymond Ave. two weeks ago.

“We’re a casual dining location with a beachy, Floridian-type vibe and I think people like that,” Rice said.

Hurricane Grill & Wings features over 30 different flavors of wing sauce listed in five categories based on spiciness. Flavors include the traditional BBQ, chipotle raspberry, chile lime, and for the really brave, the “ridiculously hot” Hurricane sauce. But it’s not just wings that the new dining location offers. Salads, burgers, steaks, seafood and dessert round out the eclectic menu.

The restaurant also boasts 24 different beers ranging from traditional domestics like Coors Light to craft beers like 21st Amendment and Magic Hat.

“We also have a legendary cocktail list that will make you feel like you’re on vacation,” Rice said. “The whole vibe is that you don’t feel like you’re in Poughkeepsie. It’s the atmosphere. It’s supposed to be upbeat and energetic but with a relaxed feel. All your worries go away.”

Rice said that the vibe and the atmosphere of Hurricane Grill & Wings separates it from the competition.

“You can’t get this type of feeling at any other restaurant,” Rice said. “Where else can you have a sandpit next to you while you’re eating?”

The restaurant is employs approximately 80 people. Rice said that the business is not only helping local people find jobs but it is also generating revenue for the Town of Poughkeepsie. Hurricane Wings also joined theDutchess County Regional Chamber of Commerce (DCRCOC) which held a ribbon cutting ceremony at the restaurant last week.

“Anytime a business comes into a town it helps everybody,” Rice said. “We want that family-friendly feeling to encourage people to come and hang out and have a great time. The Chamber has been a great help especially with contacts and references.”

Hurricane Grill & Wings has televisions all over the restaurant and football fans can check out their favorite teams during the season as every NFL game will be shown every Sunday. Those looking for their home teams in other sports or nationally televised games can find them at the restaurant as well. And it’s not just sports. Rice said that the restaurant has held promotions with beer representatives and is looking into getting a permit for live music.

Hurricane Grill & Wings opened its first location in Ft. Pierce, Fla. in 1995. Now in multiple states across the country, the restaurant in Poughkeepsie is its 55th location.
