Nightspots: Lots of buzz over Hurricane | The Poughkeepsie Journal |

The indoor-outdoor bar at Hurricane Grill and Wings in Poughkeepsie.

“Have you been to Hurricane yet?” was the question over the Fourth of July holiday. I knew the restaurant was new, but so many people had mentioned it to me that I assumed it had been open for at least a few weeks. “One week exactly,” the manager told me when I stopped in for dinner. Props to their PR team, because the word has definitely gotten around. Hurricane Grill and Wings is to the left of Juliet’s Cafe and Billiards and you can park behind the restaurant.

A beach bum at heart, I feel totally at home in the airy, coastal setting. Shutters, buoys and surfboards adorn the walls and there’s even real sand out front. One whole side of the restaurant is open so that the huge square bar has both indoor and semi-outdoor seating. There’s also a large patio area for al fresco dining.

Hurricane has two-for-one drinks on everything at any time. I tried their refreshing spin on a classic margarita and my date had a Hoegaarden, commenting on the diverse selection of draft beer.

What’s cookin’?

Hurricane has more than 30 flavors of sauces and rubs to choose from and pretty much anything on the menu can be seasoned the way you want it. I tried the mildly spicy Boss Sauce wings, which had garlic and Parmesan flavor, and the Shrimp BLT Quesadilla with Ancho Chili Lime Sauce. Through July, get an order of five wings for free by printing out the coupon on their Facebook page.
